RAGBRAI: The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa

Event Details

RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state. Heading into its 40th year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world.

RAGBRAI is a bicycle ride, not a race. It started in 1973 as a six-day ride across the state of Iowa by two Des Moines Register columnists who invited a few friends along. It is held the last full week in July. RAGBRAI is planned and coordinated by The Des Moines Register, and riders who participate in RAGBRAI understand that they do so at their own risk.

  1. This was my first time riding RAGBRAI and I picked quite a year to do it. Record high temperatures reached 100+ degrees during a few days during the ride, but overall it was a great trip!
A well organized event… camping, baggage, support, road closures and pretty much every thing else you can image were very well organized. The only thing I found was that some of the overnight towns were not as prepared or organized (mainly having information people that didn’t know where important things were).
A great ride and a lot of fun… mainly smooth roads with a lot of great people to meet and chat with along the way. However you decide to do RAGBRAI, partying and taking your time riding from town to town, or just in it to complete the ride and relax at camp, you can have fun doing either.
Not a lot of freebies and extras, and you do pay for almost everything you may want or need along the way. I think that’s the price you pay for the low registration fee of just $150 though. You can’t beat that!
Overall, I would do this ride again, because it’s a great ride and the route changes every year. Next time I may try to convince some people to join me, so that I have friends to share the experience with and of course help me set up camp! 😉
